Mission: To provide essential services and financial assistance to the elderly and disabled so they can keep their beloved pets.

The name PAWS stands for what many health studies show: pets are wonderful support. PAWS-SD, founded in 1993, works to ensure that the elderly and disabled who own pets and might not have the financial recources or mobility to keep them, won’t have to give up their “best friend.” As well as peace of mind and improved quality of life, PAWS clients receive deliveries of no-cost pet supplies, financial assistance with veterinary care, and transportation for vet and grooming appointments. Volunteers also walk dogs and even clean litter boxes!

With 300 volunteers, PAWS-SD serves 600 human and 800 animal clients, and is the only provider of such services in San Diego. One elderly paraplegic woman in Ocean Beach was so grateful for the assistance she received caring for her cat, she requested that in lieu of flowers at her funeral, donations be made to PAWS-SD. Though PAWS clients have little to spare, they do what they can to give back.
