Cultivating Optimism
by Michele Krauss

I’m not a born optimist. How can I overcome that?
First, focus on the big picture. Our basic needs for shelter, food, and clothing are there. We have so many luxuries compared to so many in the world — even compared to some in our own country. Take a moment to consider all that you have, and not the things you don’t have, and watch gratitude appear.

Some of my friends and family are natural-born complainers. How can I deal with them?
Make the right connections. You can choose to limit time spent with pessimistic people, and instead focus on spending time with more positive people. Moods are contagious. Make sure you catch the right one.

Aside from social connections, what else can I do to become an optimist?
Practice generosity in the form of giving to others through volunteering, tipping well, or simply paying a sincere compliment. Another thing you can do is to get outside — literally. Immersing yourself in nature brings a natural feeling of peace and serenity. It also may help to get in some good laugh time. Studies have shown laughter increases feelings of well-being and can even improve health. Rent your favorite funny movie today. Another tip for a cheery outlook is to cultivate some form of spirituality. This may come from your faith, forms of meditation, or physical practices like tai chi or yoga.
