Bring the Indoors... Out!

Dear Robin, I love the idea of an outdoor room — what is the best way to set one up in my home?
— Shannon E.

Dear Shannon,
Southern California is filled with sunshine and blissful breezes. This beautiful climate is conducive to taking full advantage of your home’s outdoor areas. Building an exterior environment can be an easy way to expand your existing space. Be it an acre of land, or a 10 x 10 patio, think of an outdoor space as an extension of your home’s floor plan. Constructing an open-air room can be as elaborate as erecting a permanent structure such as a pergola, gazebo, or pond… or, as simple as a few portable pieces of furniture like table and chairs, hammock, or a firepit. Just like indoor rooms, outdoor rooms need to be well thought out and planned. First, decide how you would like to use the space. Next, if the area is not already defined, consider stone, tiles, a patch of grass, pebbles, or outdoor area rug on the ground. Utilize potted plants and flowers on the edges. Then fill the space with appropriate seating and tables. Enjoy!

Designer Tip
Remember, if you are considering either a portable or built-in firepit, be certain that the ground is properly prepared to withstand the heat.
