Over the Holidays I had the opportunity to try out two new sushi restaurants in the La Jolla area, one of them has been around for some time and some how slipped my radar, and the other is brand new. I choose Sushi on the Rock for our company’s annual Christmas party, and was very impressed with the service and quality of food we received. They just recently opened Bamboo and after my experience with their other restaurant I decided to give them a try and was equally impressed. I would highly recommend either of these restaurants and would certainly place them both at the top of my sushi favorites in the greater San Diego area.

My favorite sushi place is Ono Sushi in Hillcrest. Their rolls are creative and delicious, and there is always a good vibe whenever I go there. They also have great happy hour specials. They are located at 1236 University Ave. in Hillcrest (619)298-0616

We often sneak out of the office for a quick sushi lunch — love the Lemon Roll at Chiba Japanese, you will find them at 1435 San Diego Mission Road, 619-584-1836. And, I can’t resist the Baked Halibut Roll at Toro Sushi just across the street at 6171 Mission Gorge Road, 619-8551. Date night usually means dinner at Sushi Itto in Hillcrest where Tampico Hand rolls and Sumashi Soup are a must.

When you think of fine sushi “El Cajon Blvd.” is not the first place you would think to look… However, I have found a gem in a sea of mini malls and liqueur stores… The first time I pulled into the unassuming mini mall filled with an assortment of generic business my hopes were low and for a moment I felt as though I had been the victim of a prank from a friend who had recommended that I try out…”A great little sushi place”. When I finally got out of my car I could see a line of people waiting to get in and I heard the thump thump of club music inside. I finally got in 20 min later to find a delightful party atmosphere with balloons on the ceiling, flat screen TVs on the walls and a fairly hip crowd. Things were looking up I was recommended a couple of rolls … the “Hot Kiss Roll” and the “Spicy tuna Tempura roll” I ordered the recommendation and my usual miso soup and Hamachi sashimi. All came in good time the soup was fantastic and Hamachi was very fresh and the rolls were spectacular. Using a mix of salsa and their own special sauces on the “Hot Kiss Roll” made it an unexpected treat. I have been eating there ever since and recommending it to all my friends.
