Cardamom Café
2977 Upas St. • 619-546-5609
A colorful, casual atmosphere plays host to the exotic, lemony spice known as cardamom, which appears in teas, coffee and a few sweet dishes such as “bliss cakes” and sour cream coffee cake. An omelet filled with jalapeno cream cheese and chorizo serves as a feisty kick start to the day. Fresh breads, rolls and pastries are available from the bakery counter, attesting to the owner’s love of baking as well as her fondness for cardamom, which she calls, “a beautiful spice.” The café is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The Potato Shack
120 W. I St., Encinitas • 760-436-1282
Save those carb-free diets until morning passes and indulge in a plethora of all-you-can-eat spuds at “the shack,” as it’s been called for the past 25 years. The restaurant is famous for its “American fries,” which are cubed red potatoes that are boiled and then grilled before taking on a choice of 20 different toppings. Meal portions are substantial; the pancakes flop over their plates, omelets are made with four eggs and toast, and sandwiches use double-cut bread. A homey atmosphere boasting Hang Ten surf posters and patriotic memorabilia set the stage for some very hearty eating.

Caffe Carpe Diem
3139 University Ave. • 619-285-9780
The café’s second location in North Park gives visitors a taste of Europe in an atmosphere brightened by ornate wrought-iron chandeliers, jumbo wall mirrors and a marble-topped breakfast bar. The omelets are novel and outstanding, as they capture ingredients such as Romanian kashkaval cheese, Turkish sausage, colorful peppers and more. Most plates include spring-mix salads and fluffy, herbed tabbouleh. And whole-bean coffees hailing from international origins are brewed in a vacuum-chamber machine called the Clover, which regulates temperature and potency for each cup.

Daily News Café
3001 Carlsbad Blvd. • Carlsbad, 760-729-1023
A lush landscape makes this one of the prettiest breakfast patios in San Diego County. In operation since 1991, the café’s omnipotent, three-egg omelets remain a big draw for sandal-clad locals with their morning newspapers in hand. Breakfast parfaits and cinnamon French toast using homemade bread also receive top billing. The café, which offers indoor seating as well, is part of the Tudor-style Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort, positioned within perfect eyeshot of the boulevard and in hopscotch distance from the beach.

Richard Walker’s Pancake House
520 Front St. • 619-231-7777
The kitchen sends out some dramatic surprises that you won’t find at IHOP or Denny’s, beginning squarely with any of the baked pancakes, which are cooked to a monstrous puff at 400 degrees in a German Blodgett oven. Corned beef is minced onsite for making hash. And the crepes are intensified by fresh veggies, aged cheddar and silky Hollandaise sauce. In pure urban fashion, condominium towers hover above, and customers are greeted inside by a melange of granite, marble and stained wood.
