Tips for Dry Winter Skin

by Ondine Brooks Kuraoka

Help! Winter weather seems to dry out our aging skin more with each passing year. What to do?

• Good news: The Harvard Health Letter explains that most moisturizers on the market today — pricey or not — work well. Simply find something that feels and smells good to you.

• During winter months you may benefit from an oil-based moisturizer. Non-clogging oils include jojoba, almond, primrose or avocado. “Humectant” ingredients (glycerine, alpha-hydroxy acids and sorbitol) are also effective.

• Rather than frequent peels, which can over-dry skin, try hydrating masks.

• Exfoliate regularly to remove dry surface cells, and moisturize immediately afterwards.

• Continue using sunscreen. Sun robs skin of moisture and UV damage occurs year-round.

• Humidifiers are also helpful, especially in heated rooms. If you have persistent, severe dry patches, consult a dermatologist.
