Color Trends for 2009

by Lisa Zamosky

During this time of great economic uncertainty, it is not surprising that the start of the New Year will draw our attention to a color that is felt to inspire a sense of hope and optimism. Pantone Color Institute® has chosen Mimosa, a warm, comforting yellow, as the 2009 color of the year. What other hue better expresses cheeriness, warmth and reassurance than a vibrant yellow?

Named after the ever-popular cocktail and the beautiful flowers that bloom on the mimosa tree, the color of 2009 “exemplifies the warmth and nurturing quality of the sun, properties we as humans are naturally drawn to for reassurance,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. According to Eiseman, Mimosa also represents enlightenment and sparks imagination and innovation.

When added to the kitchen and family room, or incorporated in other areas of the home through accent pieces and furnishings, Mimosa will infuse warmth and comfort. The fashion industry is expected to embrace Mimosa as well. Both men and women’s sportswear and accessories are anticipated in Mimosa in the coming year.

Following 2008, a year of declining housing markets, on-going war, and financial instability, Pantone® seems to be inviting us all to put the anxiety behind us and to welcome change and optimism into our lives in 2009.
