A Thermal Picture That Can Save Your Life
by Michele Krauss
Every three minutes, a woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer.
Breast cancer incidence in women has increased from one in twenty in 1960 to one in eight today.
What if there was a way to detect potentially life-threatening conditions that’s as easy as getting your picture taken? That option is here, and it comes in the form of thermal imaging. This non-invasive, heat-detecting technology works with the use of a specialized heat-sensitive camera. These special cameras take thousands of temperature readings in milliseconds, resulting in a multi-colored digital image.
The resulting roadmap of colors correspond to certain vascular functions. Changes to vascular functions that might indicate tumors, cysts, or new tissue growth will result in more heat or blood flow being directed to that part of the body. A skilled thermologist will be able to read and translate those color changes into tangible diagnoses.
Thermal imaging is especially ideal in the early detection of breast cancer. This is based on the principle that chemical and blood vessel activity in both pre-cancerous tissue and the area surrounding a developing tumor is almost always higher than in a normal breast. Since pre-cancerous and cancerous masses are highly metabolic tissues, they need a steady supply of blood and nutrients. This blood supply can clearly be seen via thermal imaging, and allows doctors to spot subtle vascular changes that happen before a tumor grows large enough to be detected by more standard methods.
Linda Hayes, a certified thermography consultant at Thermo Body Scan Clinics in La Jolla has seen firsthand how important body scans can be. “We’ve had many young women come in, and (our thermo-scan caught) inflammatory breast cancer before it was at a stage where they couldn’t do anything about it,” said Hayes.
Early detection may be thermal imaging’s greatest benefit. Ask any doctor about the best time to treat a life-threatening condition, and they will probably tell you: in its earliest stages. Thermal imaging is non-invasive and radiation-free. There is no touching or cutting of any tissue, just one multi-colored picture. In terms of a long and healthy life, it might prove to be the most priceless digital snapshot you’ve ever had.
