Late-night dining is a recent phenomenon in San Diego, arriving the past several years on the heels of an enriched theater scene and the revitalization of neighborhoods such as downtown, North Park and Hillcrest. Restaurateurs have kept a close watch on the growth, serving our needs when the hankering for food strikes after 10 p.m., and making available diverse menus that stretch way beyond omelets and fries. The franchises are okay, but our picks give nightcrawlers better reason to hit the hay on a full stomach.
Studio Diner
Rising from a non-commercial district in Kearny Mesa is an unexpected, chrome-wrapped structure boasting fishbowl windows and a daily, 24-hour welcome mat for insomniacs who might crave a patty melt while most San Diegans are long asleep. Studio Diner often attracts film crews working next door at Stu Segall Productions, resulting in a Hollywood theme complete with clapboards listing the daily specials and movie reels doubling as condiment trays. The menu is described as “East Coast fare with West Coast flair.” Best bets include the “sloppy Bob,” a takeoff on sloppy Joes, the corned beef hash, an English muffin tuna melt and old-fashion chocolate egg cremes. 4701 Ruffin Road • 858-715-6400
Night & Day Café
In operation since the 1920s, Night & Day café is the only place in Coronado where you can eat during the wee hours of the night. Open 24 hours daily, the café features a short row of lunch counter seats situated about four feet away from an open grill. Reubens, meatloaf sandwiches and standard breakfast items round out the bill of fare. Ravenous customers, however, will delight over the “garbage omelet,” a concoction of four eggs, ham, chili, veggies and cheese. Arrive extra late, then walk off your meal on the beach during sunrise. 847 Orange Ave. • Coronado 619-435-9776
Brian’s Eatery and Drinkery
Frittatas, toasted ravioli and a “Frankie burger” topped with peanut butter, bacon and cheese are among the draws for downtown’s night owls as they set foot into Brian’s past the witching hour. The restaurant, located on the ground level of the Ramada Inn & Suites (formerly the St. James Hotel), stays open 24 hours on weekends. The dining room is appointed with a copper-clad open kitchen and a dark-wood bar and shelving unit that once graced screen legend Joan Crawford’s second home in Italy. Attesting to the late-night theme here, look for the “high heel holes” Crawford left in the bar while supposedly dancing the night away at a party she hosted. 828 Sixth Ave. • 619-702-8410
Commonwealth Café
One of the T-shirt logos at the Commonwealth Café in North Park shows a crescent moon hovering alongside a night owl. The design reflects the owners’ original business plan to keep the eatery open until 4:00 a.m. each day. But until the city grants a permit, patrons have until midnight to buckle down on mac-n-cheese, Western burgers, Buffalo wings and a slew of other classic American chow. Everything’s homemade, including the limeade and condiments. Metal-plaque soda ads and stools upholstered in emerald-green vinyl add to the eatery’s retro atmosphere. 3408 30th St. • 619-295-2233
Tyler’s Taste of Texas
When the craving hits for barbecue chicken and saucy pork ribs at 3 a.m., look no further than Tyler’s Taste of Texas in El Cajon. Open 24 hours daily, the 18-year-old restaurant offers ample seating amid a down-home theme replete with wagon wheels, bull skulls and moonshine bottles. Other popular menu items include Texas-style catfish and Uncle Shorty’s breakfast: two sausage patties over biscuits, with scrambled eggs, gravy and potatoes.

Golden Dragon
Long famous for its ornate, neon signage and unswerving Chinese fare, the Golden Dragon in Hillcrest keeps its woks sizzling until 3 a.m. on most days. The once-dank atmosphere has given way to a cohesive minimalist design accented with banquettes upholstered in floral brocade. Favorite dishes include Asian hog wings, lettuce wraps, shrimp spun in crispy egg noodles, and the recent addition of several spicy Thai dishes that will provide your palate with a little pre-bedtime burn. 414 University Ave. • 619-296-4119
Modus Supper Club
Freshly made ramen and modern European dishes can be found at this stylish Bankers Hill supper club, where the kitchen stays open until midnight Tuesdays through Sundays. DJ music and a sleek bar area offering an array of crafty cocktails augment the seductive, late-night dining experience. In addition to full dinners, the menu features vegetarian and small-plate categories, a perfect come-on for those seeking lighter, healthier fare after enjoying a night out at the theater. 2202 Fourth Ave. • 619-236-8516
