Hot Peppers Have A Secret
Varieties of hot peppers offer a lot more than color and flavor. Not only do they rev your metabolism, they also may help stave off a cold. Hot peppers contain twice the amount of vitamin C found in citrus fruits. Capsaicin, the active ingredient in peppers, is also a pain reliever, and a common ingredient in over-the-counter pain creams.
The Locals Have It
In a recent study conducted by Consumer Reports, clients of small, neighborhood gyms reported being happier there than at larger, national chains. Respondents gave feedback on staff, equipment, classes, crowds and billing issues. Places that got the best marks were local community centers, schools, nonprofits and neighborhood YMCAs. Large chain health clubs received failing grades for delays and red tape when it came to canceling or freezing memberships.
Uncommon Help for IBS
Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a problem for 1 in 5 Americans. Its symptoms can range from debilitating intestinal cramping to constipation and diarrhea. IBS sufferers are often at a loss for effective treatment options. The Journal of Family Practice recently found that certain non-drug treatments like herbal formulations, probiotics, special diets, therapy and even journaling offered significant relief to some patients. Hypnosis was also touted as a non-drug treatment for IBS, reducing pain and discomfort in about 80 percent of patients who tried it.
Keeping the Weight Off
As anyone who has gone on a diet knows, keeping the weight off can be quite a challenge. Researchers at Duke University Medical Center found that staying in contact with a weight-loss counselor after losing the pounds can help keep them off for good. Some study participants stayed in touch with counselors in person, and others consulted with web-based counselors. A third group was given weight loss information and then tried to maintain their new weight on their own. At the conclusion of the study, those who maintained personal, one-on-one contact with a counselor had the best outcome.
