Save Your Skin From Hidden Bacteria
by Michele Krauss

—[ Q and A ]—

Could my makeup brushes be the cause of recent breakouts on my skin?
They certainly could. Makeup brushes can become a breeding ground for pesky bacteria if they’re not cleaned regularly. Clean brushes every one or two weeks, depending on the frequency of use. Shampoo or a mild cleanser with warm water should work just fine.

Is it ever okay to share makeup?
No! Some used makeup has been found to carry yeast, staph, and fungal infections. Mascara and lipstick should be at the top of the list of items never to share. Mascara can play host to the highly contagious conjunctivitis, and lipstick can provide a breeding ground for viruses.

Can old makeup harm my skin too?
It won’t harm your skin, per se. But all makeup has a shelf life, and certain products can hold bacteria longer than others. Mascara only lasts from 3 to 6 months. Concealer lasts about 18 months — perhaps less if you use it all the time. Don’t use liquid foundation after a year, and use a makeup sponge as opposed to your germy fingers.
